Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that the body uses for energy. Some foods naturally contain sugar such as fruits, vegetables and dairy products. These foods also contain essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs.

However, "added sugar" such as the sugar and syrups added to food during processing, preparing or at the table, are nothing more than added calories with little to no nutritional value. To reduce the risk of developing health problems, it is imperative that we limit our daily consumption of added sugars.
